Frequently asked questions about traditional kitchens

What is a Shaker kitchen?
A Shaker kitchen takes its name from the 18th-century Shaker community, who valued simple, well-made furniture without unnecessary ornamentation. The signature is a five-piece door — four narrow rails framing a flat central panel — with no decorative carving, finished in painted wood or natural timber. Shaker kitchens have become the dominant traditional style in the UK because they bridge old and new: they suit period properties but don't look fussy or dated.
What's the difference between in-frame and standard Shaker kitchens?
Standard (or 'lay-on') Shaker kitchens have doors that sit on top of the cabinet carcass, like most modern kitchens. In-frame Shaker kitchens have doors that sit flush within a fixed timber frame — the same way traditional joinery has been built for centuries. In-frame is more authentic, more expensive and significantly more durable, but requires precise construction and adds 4–6 weeks to manufacturing.
Are traditional kitchens more expensive than modern ones?
Slightly, on average. Painted-to-order finishes add cost over the standard pre-made colour palettes used in modern ranges, and solid-oak detailing or in-frame construction adds to the manufacturing cost. That said, the price gap has narrowed considerably — many of our traditional ranges are competitively priced with our modern German-built ranges, and a painted finish can be refreshed in 10–15 years rather than replaced entirely.
Can I have modern appliances in a traditional kitchen?
Absolutely — almost all our traditional kitchen projects use fully modern integrated appliances (induction hobs, steam ovens, large American fridges, instant boiling taps). The cabinetry style and the appliance technology are independent choices. The trick is to either fully integrate appliances behind matching doors, or to choose appliance finishes (brushed steel, brass, matte black) that feel sympathetic to the kitchen's overall aesthetic.
How durable are painted Shaker doors?
Modern factory-painted finishes are very durable — far more so than hand-painted finishes from twenty years ago. Multi-coat factory paint with a UV-cured topcoat resists chipping, yellowing and most household chemicals. Touch-up paint is supplied with most projects so any small marks can be repaired. Expect a quality painted kitchen to look pristine for 10+ years before needing a refresh.
